"Kengät Tonavan rannalla" (Shoes on the Danube Bank) on koskettavan kaunis muistomerkki toisen maailmansodan aikana murhatuille juutalaisille, jotka pakotettiin riisumaan kenkänsä Tonavan rannalla ja odottamaan kuolettavia laukauksia. Muistomerkin suunnitteli elokuvaohjaaja Can Togay ja sen toteutti kuvanveistäjä Gyula Pauer vuonna 2005. Kuudestakymmenestä maahan valetusta rautaisesta kenkäparista koostuva muistomerkki sijaitsee Budapestissa Tonavan rantakadulla, Pestin puolella. Kesti ikuisuuden saada muutama kunnollinen kuva, koska ihmisiä parveili muistomerkillä niin paljon. Ehdin toki myös ajatella niitä tuhansia viattomia ihmisiä, jotka oikeasti menettivät henkensä Tonavan rannalla. Lasten kenkien näkeminen oli raastavinta.
The Shoes on the Danube Bank, a hauntingly beautiful memorial to honour the Jewish people who were forced to take off their shoes and wait for the killing shots by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen during World War II. The Memorial was conceived by film director Can Togay and created by sculptor Gyula Pauer in 2005. It's located on the Pest side of the Danube Promenade in Budapest. It took forever to get a few good photographs because there were so many people there. I did also take some time to really contemplate the memorial, what actually happened there to thousands of innocent people. Seeing the shoes of children was the hardest.
