Paths That Cross Will Cross Again

Wienin ostokseni voi laskea yhden käden sormilla. Yksi ostoksistani oli ehkä laulajana parhaiten tunnetun Patti Smithin kirja nimeltä Just Kids (2010).  En ole tutustunut naisen taiteelliseen tuotantoon juuri lainkaan, mutta se asia tulee varmasti tämän lukukokemuksen jälkeen korjaantumaan. Patti Smith on valtavan hyvä kirjoittaja. Kirja tempaisi minut heti mukaansa, luin sitä hostellissa pienen lukulamppuni valossa yömyöhään ja seuraavina päivinä oikein odotin, milloin pääsisin taas lukemaan. Just Kids kertoo hyvin henkilökohtaisesti ja rehellisesti Patti Smithin ja Robert Mapplethorpen suhteesta niin ystävinä, rakastajina kuin taiteilijoinakin. Se on myös kuvaus kahden nuoren taiteilijan kehityskaaresta ja noususta kuuluisuuteen. Vaikka kirja keskittyy pääasiassa yllä mainittuihin asioihin, valottaa kirja myös Smithin lapsuutta ja sitä, miten naisen vahva tahto ja päättäväisyys tuli esiin jo hyvin nuorena.

"Patricia," my mother scolded, "put a shirt on!"
"It's too hot", I moaned. "No one else has one on."

vehemently and announced that I was never going 

to become anything but myself, that I was of the 

clan of Peter Pan and we did not grow up."

The things I bought in Vienna can be counted with one hand's fingers. One of those things was a book by Patti Smith called "Just Kids" (2010). I haven't really familiarised myself with Patti's art but that will surely change after this reading experience. Patti Smith is an excellent writer. I got so carried away by this book that I had to read it in the dead of night at my hostel bed and during the next few days I was anticipating the moment when I could start reading it again. "Just Kids" is a very honest and personal depiction of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe's relationship as friends, lovers and artists. It is a portrait of two young artist's learning curve and rise to fame. It also illuminates Smith's childhood and how se possessed a strong will and determinance from a very young age.
