Vuonna 1874 käyttöön vihitty Wienin keskushautausmaa - Zentralfriedhof - on yksi koko maailman suurimmista hautausmaista. Sen pinta-ala on reilut 200 hehtaaria, ja se kätkee muuriensa sisään yli 330 000 hautaa. Hautausmaa on itse asiassa niin valtava, että siellä kulkee jopa oma bussilinja. Myös yksityisautoilu hautausmaan sisällä on sallittua. Ilman karttaa hautausmaalle ei siis kannata lähteä seikkailemaan. Wieniläisen vitsin mukaan keskushautausmaa on puolet Zürichin koosta, mutta tuplasti hauskempi paikka. Minä ja ystäväni Maria vietimme hautausmaalla yhden kokonaisen päivän valokuvaten. Koska hautausmuseo ei tuona kyseisenä päivänä ollut auki - ja ystäväni halusi ehdottomasti käydä siellä - palasimme hautausmaalle toisenakin päivänä. Vaikka Zentralfriedhof tarkoittaa suoraan käännettynä keskushautausmaata, sijaitsee hautausmaa Simmeringin kaupunginosassa, noin 20-30 minuutin päässä Wienin ydinkeskustasta. Ratikalla pääsee suoraan hautausmaan porteille. Hautausmaa on avoinna joka päivä ja sisäänpääsy on ilmainen.

The Vienna Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) - opened in 1874 - is one of the largest cemeteries in the entire world. It's size is formidable: 590 acres. According to a Viennese joke the Central Cemetery is "Half the size of Zurich, but twice as much the fun". I've never been to Zurich so I wouldn't know. Inside the cemetery's walls are over 330 000 graves, so you can imagine it's not a quick visit if you want to see even a small fraction of the cemetery properly. In fact, it is so huge that there is a designated cemetery bus that operates only in the cemetery. Private car traffic is also allowed. One should not wander around in the cemetery without a map. We didn't (my friend and I). We went there on two different occasions. The first time we spent the entire day there photographing. It was a Sunday so the Funeral museum was not open and my friend really wanted to check that out. We came back another day to visit the museum and do some more photographing in an area of the cemetery we hadn't explored yet. Although there is the word "central" in the cemetery's name it is actually located in the district of Simmering, about 20-30 minutes from the city center of Vienna. It is easily accessible by public transportation. The cemetery itself is open every day and entry is free.
